Taobao is one of the top eCommerce platform in China but depending on your brand and the goal you want to achieve it may not be the best platform to start in China.
China is huge on eCommerce, that is true. There are literally half a dozen large eCommerce brand in China and that’s not including dozens of other smaller one most people may not heave heard of.
The biggest eCommerce Platforms in China are Toabao, TMall, JD, DangDang. Amazon China is also a choice, but they’re kind of small in market share.
The reason why a lot of people will recommend Taobao is because it is the most popular platform in China and it’s what Jack Ma call the only C2C platform in China which really mean that it’s the only eBay like platform in China where literally anyone(in China) can setup a shop and start selling stuff Today.
The problem however, is Taobao has a bad reputation for selling knockoffs and counterfit products and it tends to attract all the price center consumers in China. Taobao is great if your one person reselling other brand product in China but it’s not the most ideal choice if you’re a brand and want to Brand and sell your product in China.
In your case I would recommend other channel such as MiaBaby, TMall or JD, these are more brand focused eCommerce platform. They’re stricter on who can sell on their platform.
I hope this helps, I can literally write a whole book on this subject as China is so big on eCommerce lol. Fore more details about China Ecommerce, here is a good supplement:http://grizzlypandamarketing.com/10-ways-distribute-physical-products-online-china/
Anyway, eCommerce is not your only option. You can enter China market with partnership or even local shops and retails.
